Which Gramicci Pant is Right For You?

Our “Best Pants in the Game” tagline isn’t just self-proclaimed—we’ve earned that title through 44 years of experience making clothes. What began in 1982 in a garage in Oxnard, California, started with a simple problem: how to give people more freedom to move on the wall.

Taking inspiration from a roomy pair of karate pants that cinched at the waist, we created what would become the Gramicci pant. With a diamond-shaped gusset at the crotch for full 180-degree flexibility when high-stepping, along with an adjustable webbed belt, we changed what outdoor pants could be.

Made from durable cotton twill to withstand chalk-covered climbs up routes like Snake Dike on Half Dome, the pants were designed to go beyond the wall. They could be worn post-climb to grab a pint with friends or skate down to the beach. That duality, performance on the rock and comfort in everyday life, is what gave our pants a global following. 

Today, we’re known for four classic pant silhouettes. We’ll break down each one to help explain the differences in fabric and fit, whether you’re at your local climbing gym or trekking along urban riverside paths toward mountain waterfalls.

Our Gramicci Pants put us on the map, not just within the climbing community but across the broader style landscape. The fit is the Goldilocks of our pants offering: just right. They feature our trademarked diamond crotch gusset, full 180-degree leg movement, and a tough-as-nails eco-cotton twill fabric that only gets better with wear and washing.

They have a roomy fit through the top block and thigh, with a slight taper through the rest of the leg. Like most of our core classics, the elasticated waist makes them adaptable to everyday settings, from an impromptu hike to getting comfortably crammed into a long flight.

These are essentially the same as the Gramicci Pants, but they’ve been updated with a straighter fit through the top block and thigh, along with a one-inch wider leg opening and one-inch shorter inseam.

They’re made from the same eco-cotton twill fabric that can take a beating on the wall and withstand whatever other climbing accoutrements you throw at them. If you’ve wanted to wear the OG Gramicci Pants with boots but worried the leg opening was too narrow, these alleviate that problem while still retaining the hallmarks of the namesake version.

If you’re looking for pants that combine the functionality of painter pants with that of a climbing pant, these are it.

They’ve developed a bit of a cult following, flying more under the radar than the Gramicci Pants, but offering a more relaxed, wider fit throughout the leg.

They also sit slightly higher on the inseam than the G-Pant. Made from our trusty cotton-canvas twill, they feature wraparound pockets that extend from the front to the back, giving them a cargo-style feel without the hassle of buttons or Velcro. And the best part? Extra webbing sits atop the right pocket to keep your keys secure and your carabiners handy.

The Loose Tapered Ridge Pant is our nod to the military’s OG-107 fatigues, with front-and-back patch pockets, but designed for climbing.

Cut from our signature cotton twill, they’re designed to be roomy through the waist with a slightly narrower taper than our Loose Tapered Pants. They’re also just a bit longer.
